The script tells the story of a heedless but good-hearted rookie film-maker. He wants to make it big in Hollywood; the only trouble is he lives on one of the most remote outposts in the world, the tiny island of Britannica in the South Pacific Ocean. Undeterred by this obstacle, he plans to save enough money to chase his dream while working as a cannibal impersonator for passing cruise ships.
Sceptical of Woody's dreams, his girlfriend dumps him and things seems to going from bad to worse when his Aunt, the one admirer of his wacky ideas is killed at just 83, in a freak hang-gliding accident.
But Aunt Candlebra had invested in a large consignment of lobsters and Woody is the sole beneficiary of her will. He uses the money to set off on his quest, deciding to make a video diary of his experience.
At Cape Town airport, SA, Woody is distracted by a little boy playing with green bottles and is suddenly inspired to create his masterpiece, an adaptation of the nursery rhyme, ‘Ten green bottles'.
Completely consumed by writing and reacting to jet lag by behaving even more erratically than usual, Woody gets confused at his stopover in Holy Wood Airport, Nova Scotia and takes a bus into Halifax instead of his connecting flight to L.A.
By the time he sees a shop selling Canadian Crystal Balls and realises his mistake, it`s too late and the high price of a flight means Woody is stranded.
However, it is not long before Woody's characteristic optimism returns and he proudly announces to his video diary that he has altered his plans to make his movie in Nova Scotia.
But his confusion continues as he tries to pitch his film to the bemused workers at Universal Tyres and Tinfoil Town.
Woody's inheritance quickly runs out and he finds himself staying at the Salvation Army, where his new friend, beggar and part-time Park Hoover-Operator Jefferson assures him that there is generally only one major killing per month.
Eventually Woody signs up with a recruitment agency, All Hands where he imagines they will hook him up with some Production Execs. Instead the Careers Officer, Paul Ball, places him as a jewelry store attendant and later an elastic band factory operative which both end in mayhem.
During a crisis meeting, Woody finds an old script that Ball wrote many years earlier. It emerges Ball has suffered from secret delusions of being a script-writer most of his life. Woody tries to convince Ball to help him make his movie as a token work experience.
Ball shows Woody the door, but then Ball`s boss decides it would be good publicity.
The pair re-write the script and decide to approach Halifax's number one movie producer, the gold loving, cigar-chomping Frank Coole.
If Coole decides to back the movie, Woody will move closer to his dream and Ball will begin to shake off his office nickname of `Odd-ball`.
