Think of this like Mr, Holland's Opus travels to the Dominican Republic and finds a love story. Casey Bledel is fresh out of college in the 1980s, and is convinced to follow a college buddy to the Dominican Republic, where they hope to make movies with a new studio that is starting up there.
Casey is a true alien to the country, not even knowing Spanish. But he's going to learn a lot as what was supposed to be a brief stay turns into a 30-year journey. Along the way, he encounters first-hand some of the island's biggest historical event, and even finds love along the way in the form of Dania, who literally saves his life from an angry mob during the austerity riots.
But Dania is far from perfect, and her strong-minded mother — who locals have nicknamed La Viuda (the widow) — doesn't make life easier.
Work, family, kids are all far from routine in this story. And sadly, the Bledel clan will be no strangers to loss and pain, as they see the full fury of what life can dish out.
