Finding Sam is an anti rom-com coming of age drama set in modern day London. Sam is a confused and recluse 23 year old pushover who is trapped playing a typical 40's housewife to her business and party orientated girlfriend in their swanky central London apartment after her music loving mother died and father moved abroad. This lifestyle has caused Sam to give up on her music fully, in doing so repressing her mother's death and focusing all her energy on this toxic relationship.
Sam's world is given a well needed shake once she realises her girlfriend has been unfaithful and is left on the street with nowhere to go but her alcoholic aunt, Maggie's. Maggie's house is littered with empty cans and bottles, there is a constant thick fog of cigarette smoke and the furniture is old and tired, worlds away from the apartment she used to live in. Maggie lets her stay as long as Sam agrees to find a job and start paying rent.
Sam being the repressed young woman that she is, avoids all responsibility and thinks finding another person to be in a relationship with will save her from this mess she is in. Sam lies to Maggie and instead of going to look for a job she goes on a date with a selfish and self centered airhead, Isla. As Sam continues her stay with Maggie it is made clear that her aunt has not dealt with the death of her sister, much like Sam. Maggie shows Sam an unfinished piece of music her and Sam's mother, Katherine, wrote and explains that years of alcohol abuse has rendered her incapable to play, therefore incapable to finish the piece. Maggie then realises she can use Sam to finish the piece. Due to the years Sam avoided her calling to music she shuns Maggie away and takes refuge in another date with Isla.
It is made obvious that Isla is using Sam, but due to Sam's desperation she tries her hardest to make it work, so much so that they end up sleeping together and Sam is hurriedly shown the door. Once returning to Maggie, all comes to a head and they argue to the point where Maggie threatens to call the police. Sam is pushed out and is then forced to grow up and stand on her own two feet. A new meaning of maturity washes over her as she gets a job in a local bar which hosts music events. This teases out her love for playing which she eventually comes around to and gives her enough confidence to finish the piece of music Maggie and her mother started, to which she plays for Maggie in the bar.
