Charleston, South Carolina
The Civil War rages and the city is under attack. A gypsy is on a quest to retrieve sacred stakes that belong to an ancient chest. She succeeds but as she leaves town tragedy falls upon her and the chest is lost until today.
Today twins Jack and Jules Evans are soccer players at the College of Charleston. As graduation approaches Jack is hopeful that he will be drafted by an MLS team. Jack faces the daily challenge of living life as a closeted gay man in high-level soccer where being out can kill a career. Jules who is gay as well, has been encouraging Jack to come out but he knows it will wreck his draft chances.
Jules' career was cut short due to injury and she now works on a thesis paper studying why people will believe psychics and fortune tellers. Her curiosity stems from the fact that their mother, aunt, and many generations of women before them were both psychics and fortune tellers.
When a storm unearths the chest Jules stumbles across it. When she realizes the image on the kit matches the window of her aunt house she can not figure out what it is. The chest has no seams but is hollow. When Jack opens it they realize that the stories they were told of magical powers are true. The power within the box lets you open the mind's eye of another person and fill it with visions of your creation.
As Jack’s team begins to advance towards the playoffs Jack witnesses a teammate commit a hate crime. He is torn between reporting the incident and losing his teammate for the game or staying quiet for a better chance of winning. As the rewards rise and the consequences magnify, Jack's life is endangered.
Jules begins to experiment with the power from the box. It works and it when it does, it becomes obvious that this was to be used for love potions and spells. It was for the good of women. Yet when it falls into the hands of men demons are created and souls are destroyed. Jack uses the power to bring your worst nightmare out. As the dreams increase in intensity the aftereffects take their toll. It all crashes when a line is crossed and people are hurt.
