BOBBY and RAY CARTWRIGHT may be brothers, but they're not particularly close. Bobby is in his early 20s and generally directionless, while Ray is only 16 but knows exactly what he wants out of life. They've never had very much in common, and don't know how to talk to each other. When their mother unexpectedly passes away, Bobby is faced with a big choice: grow up and figure out how to take care of a sixteen-year-old, or dump Ray off with their father, a man they haven't even seen, let alone spoken to in over fifteen years. After getting in an argument and breaking up with his longtime girlfriend HOPE, Bobby decides to pass Ray off on their father, and with a decidedly reticent Ray in tow, they set out on a road trip across the country from Ohio to California. Along the way they come in contact with a cast of characters including JESSICA, a beautiful waitress living in a small town who both Bobby and Ray fall for, BILLY a townie who teaches Ray how to "party" and ETHAN, a traveling musician with a dark allure who takes Ray under his wing and poses a threat to Bobby as a surrogate big brother figure. Throughout all of this and while they make their way ever westward, the central question remains: can Bobby and Ray discover what it takes to truly be brothers, or will they remain strangers who happen to share the same blood?
