Set against the lush, untamed backdrop of 1980s Panama, MISSIONARY KID follows ISAIAH, a shy and imaginative boy growing up in a devout missionary family as he navigates the delicate terrain between belief, fear, and wonder. As he tries to make sense of a world framed by heaven or hell, salvation or damnation, and the fleeting nature of life itself, ISAIAH discovers unexpected grace - in the jungle, in movies, in boyhood, and in small moments of magic that make the world feel vast and full of possibility. MISSIONARY KID explores what it’s like for innocent, curious children to come of age within intensely spiritual environments. With the emotional resonance of BOYHOOD and the nostalgic warmth of JOJO RABBIT, it’s a coming-of-age story about learning to hear your own voice in a noisy, complicated, and often conflicting world.
