Maria Bochkareva, the leader of the "Women's Battalion of Death" in World War One, is interrogated by a panel of Bolsheviks. Under interrogation, she recounts her life as she goes from poor peasant to leader of the celebrated women's battalion near the end of the war. Tomas Blok, one of the interrogators is skeptical of her stories and grows extremely hostile toward her which puts him at odds with the primary interrogator. As the interrogation proceeds, tension builds, not only between Bochkareva and her interrogators but between the interrogators themselves.
